On sustainable train travel in the Rocky Mountains
Inspiration from the world: Denmark is in the front when it comes to sustainable tourism. But we can always learn from other destinations such as train trips in Rocky Mountains
The luxury train and slow travel option has taken steps to reduce its carbon emissions by 80 tonnes per year, increased onboard recycling, and is partnering with two charities. One works to reduce hunger in communities where Rocky Mountaineer works around the world, and the second is a charity that protects wildlife along the spectacular routes where its trains journey.
“It’s the ultimate low carbon, slow travel trundle through the Canadian wilderness. I love inching alongside all those sheer-faced canyons and dense forests glittering with fast-moving rivers – a grand landscape that’s fully respected by the low-impact train line that’s gently snaking through it.”

Train travel is measurably better for the environment than either flying or driving, and the Rocky Mountaineer takes its sustainable tourism responsibility seriously. The train line works to protect the areas it travels through and focuses on using resources wisely – including reducing carbon emissions. Further, the Rocky Mountaineer makes annual contributions to Tree Canada’s National Greening Program, which has resulted in over 13,500 new trees being planted across BC to date.
