Should you pay more for your plane ticket for the sake of the environment?
A new study shows that almost one third of all Danes would prefer an additional fee for travelling by airplane to limit the CO2 emissions.
To be able to impact the climate change experts says that lowering the emissions from the air traffic is an inevitable step. However, the political parties that fight for a sustainable future does not have this topic on their agenda.
Most of the Danes who participated in the study conducted by Norstat for Altinget and Jyllands-Posten, indicated that they were satisfied with the current prices of plane tickets and that they therefore did not see any reason for additional fees to cover the climate impact. 31 percent thought the additional fee was a good idea while 53 percent of the participants did not like the idea. 16 percent answered "I don't know".
The Swedish model won't be adapted in Denmark
In our neighboring country Sweden a national aviation fee has been introduced since the 1st of April for all flights taking off from Sweden. The fees vary depending if the flight is within national borders, international within 6 000 kilometers or if the flight is more than 6 000 kilometers. The Danish experts does not however believe in this narrow, national model that Sweden's adapted. Niels Buus Kristensen explains that with a model like this the risk is that the air traffic will move on to other neighboring countries instead.
Study results show differences
According to the study there was a tendency of red-block supporters being for the additional fee while blue-block supporters tended to vote against the fee. Looking at the educational level of participants of the study it could be noted that most of the people with a higher education had a positive view on the additional aviation fee while people with lower education tended to disagree. Income level of the participants did not however show any clear patterns.
