Cruise tourism needs to become more environmentally friendly
Denmark continues to be a green pioneer among other countries. With the government's climate and air proposal " Sammen om en grønnere fremtid " (Together for a greener future) focus will also be set on the tourism industry and the pollution of the cruise and shipping industry.
Shipping is a source of both pollution and greenhouse gases. Even though the emissions of sulfur have decreased in Danish waters, international efforts are still needed. In addition, cruise tourism is increasing in Denmark - especially in the Copenhagen Harbor. This is of course positive news for Danish tourism, but there is also an increasing number of complaints about air pollution and noise from the big ships.
Therefore cruise tourism in the Baltic Sea region needs to become more environmentally friendly. The Danish government is, in cooperation with the industry, authorities and tourism organizations, initiating an international cooperation project to promote more environmentally friendly cruise tourism in the Baltic Sea region. The government will meanwhile also explore the possibilities for joint action in international forums for new cruise ships to engage in more environmentally friendly efforts.
