Travel company Thomas Cook stops trips to parks with captive killer whales

Thomas Cook stops selling trips to parks where captive killer whales are being held as 90 percent of their costumers implies that animal welfare is important.

From next summer onwards Danish Spies and other travel agencies owned by the European travel giant Thomas Cook won't be selling tickets to Seaworld in Florida or Loro Parque on the island of Tenerife of the Canary Islands. The reason behind the decision is that the parks have captive killer whales and the shows with the animals are seen as animal cruelty by animal rights organizations.

"We have actively been working with several animal rights organizations during the past 18 months and taking note of their scientific evidence. We have also received feedback from our costumer and more than 90 percent have informed us that it is important for them that their travel agency takes animal welfare seriously. That is the foundation of our decision." says Peter Fankhauser, the CEO of Thomas Cook.

Last year Thomas Cook started investigating 49 wildlife parks to see if they met the corporation's animal welfare policy. According to BBC 29 of these parks did not live up to the requirements and Thomas Cook will consequently stop selling tickets to these parks.
