Travelling sustainably in Copenhagen as a tourist is easy, something that is confirmed by the Wuppertal Institute's sustainable transportation report, ranking Copenhagen as number one amongst 13 other European cities.
In Wuppertal Institute's recent sustainable transportation report they assessed the urban mobility performance of 13 European cities. The assessment entails 21 different indicators within public transportation, road safety, air quality, active mobility and mobility management. The cities included in the report are Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Copenhagen, London, Madrid, Moscow, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Vienna and Zurich, where Copenhagen came out as the number one sustainable city when it comes to transportation.
The report concluded that the road to success in terms of sustainable transportation within cities seems to be a strong political will as well as alternative solutions to motorized traffic that is causing pollution, road accidents, increased travel time and noise.
Biking is a deeply rooted tradition for the Danes, 45% of work trips in Copenhagen are done by bike and safety in traffic is highly prioritized. Biking is also mentioned in the report as an especially high contributing factor to Copenhagen's sustainable ranking.
